You may have seen the movie but did you know it was based on eyewitness accounts from passengers, stewardesses, even Captain's have seen them On December 29, 1972, flight 401 a lockheed L-1011 tristar, started with a simple lightbulb for the nose landing gear, which they spent time trying to fix and see if the gear was down and locked somewhere in all the confussion the captain somehow disingaged the autopiolot and the plane slowly started to fall to the ground without anyone noticing, the tower did but when they asked the crew of flight 401, what was going on they just asked how things where going instead of why are you falling to the ground? 401 crashed into the Everglades in Flordia Killing 101 people and 2 died shortly afterword and 77 survivors.
1 that died, in the crash was Captain Robert Loft and one who died shortly afterword was Flight Engineer Don Repo, as they removed parts from the Everglades some where tagged for reuse in other use in other aircraft. As time went along these parts from engins to seat cushions. People who flew in these aircrafts began reporting seeing things, mainly Don Repo, but Captain Loft was seen as well.
This escalated til one evening while another crew of L-1011 was having a problem and Don Repo appeared in the flight engineers seat and said "There will never be another crash of an L-1011."
The Captain later wanted to hear the thingypit recorder tape, because noone believed him, the FAA and Eastern did not want the tape getting out and told him no. So after much, fanagling he finally got to hear it and there was Don Repo's voice clear as could be, on the voice recorder.
Shortly after that FAA and Eastern had all parts from 401 removed from aircrafts that had them.
