The Roycroft was started about 1895 by Elbert Hubbard, in East Aurora, New York. It created lititure, arts, crafts, furniture and it also had a school. On May 5, 1915 Elbert and his wife Alice were on the ill fated Luisitania, A Cunard liner that was torpedoed off the old head of Kinsaile, Ireland by a German u-boat. The main cause of the sinking was a second explosion caused by the torpedo kicking up coal dust and igniting. When the torpedo hit the coal bunkers of the Luisitania, Elbert and Alice's bodies where never recovered. Some speculation had been made that they had become trapped in the elevator as the Luisitania sank, but these reports could never be confirmed or denied. Some now say Elbert's ghost haunts the Roycroft as well as many other areas of East Aurora.
