The connections between crystals & the physical body have been known about for thousands of years. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which goes back at least 5,000 years but is still in use today, a formula for ear problems contains Magnetite. In modern crystal healing, Magnetite has an affinity with bones but in the ancient Chinese system, both the bones & the ears are ruled by the kidneys - which Magnetite is said to stimulate. Modern crystal healing & TCM use Hematite for blood conditions & insomnia. Traditionally, it's said to calm the spirit, thus aiding sleep,& to cool the blood, arresting bleeding. The Chinese still use Iron Pyrite for bones & fractures, as do crystal healers today.
Crystal formulas for medicines & unguents go back thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians left behind prescriptions that include Malachite, Chrysocolla, Jasper, Hematite, & Chalcedony. Malachite & Chrysocolla were ground up & sprinkled on wounds, and indeed modern science has proved that they are an effective bactericide, killing staphylococcus infections.
Greek & Roman healers such as Pliny & Galen continued this tradition. Galen used Hematite for headaches; Pliny used it for blood disorders. In medieval times, crystals formed an important part of a physician's pharmacopeia, & respected healers, such as the nun Hildegard of Bingen, utilized a wide range of gem elixirs in medicinal work. North & South American Native people used crystals for diagnosis & treatment.
Many crystal formulations have passed into modern medicines. However, crystal healers work by placing appropriate stones on the body, or preparing an elixir to drink or bathe the affected part. This means that substances that could be toxic if taken internally can be beneficially applied externally.
